An important and long-awaited decision for the agricultural sector of Ukraine, namely, equivalence for grain seeds from Ukraine was supported by the European Parliament.

The decision was passed on October 7, 2020 at the plenary session of the European Parliament that took place in Brussels with the remote participation of the Members. 491 MEPs voted for the decision, 159 - against, 47 - abstained.

This decision on the EU recognition of equivalence of the certification system and the seeds produced in Ukraine opens the way for the export of grain seeds to the EU: oats (Avena sativa L.), barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.), rye (Secale cereale L.), triticale (xTriticosecale Wittm. ex A. Camus), as well as sorghum seeds (Sorghum bicolor (L.), and corn (Zea mais L. ).

On the 20th day after publication of the Decision in the Official Journal of the EU it entered into force: https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=CELEX%3A32020D1544&qid=1603710989006.

In the Council Decision 2003/17/EC dated December 16, 2002 Ukraine was included in the Annex II, where it is listed in the list of the third countries, which were recognized by the EU as those countries where the equivalence of seed certification and seed-producing system has been confirmed: https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=CELEX%3A02003D0017-20201115&qid=1605512706819

From now on, with the confirmed equivalence for such varieties, the possibility of export to the EU countries is open for the varieties that are registered directly in the EU countries (not only in Ukraine) provided that the relevant phytosanitary requirements are met.
